LIVE A BALANCED LIFESTYLE
BRAIN HEALTH | 9.5.2016 | BY KEVIN PEARCE
We all know what’s involved in a balanced lifestyle: good nutrition, enough sleep, regular exercise, fulfilling work, and recreation. When your life activities are in balance, your brain benefits. The reverse is true too, if you focus on balancing your brain, everything else seems to fall into place. Emotional balance is important, but after a TBI, it can be very difficult to achieve. As many of you know, the two best ways I’ve found to experience mental and emotional balance is through yoga and meditation. Yoga has also helped tremendously with my physical balance, which is obviously a great side effect.
Living a balanced lifestyle does not mean completely abstaining from anything that isn’t 100% healthful - it just means doing so in moderation. Chances are you feel better after taking care of your body and your brain, so just do more of those things that benefit you.
Another way to find emotional balance is to be aware of your thoughts. After a TBI, motor control is often negatively affected, and simple tasks can become extremely difficult. Instead of beating yourself up after you knock something over, recognize that it’s all part of the process and really not a big deal in the grand scheme of things. Silence the negative self-talk immediately and move on.
