CONNECT THROUGH WELLNESS!

“Having a buddy to check in with encourages me and helps me stay motivated” -Rey Vasquez
Support systems are essential for everyone, and are especially important following a brain injury. Pairing up with a friend (“fitness partner”, “wellness buddy” or whatever term you choose) can help you both as you pursue your wellness goals. A supportive partnership can help with motivation, commitment, accountability and maintenance and can have positive impacts on health, confidence, social connection and quality of life.
Rey and I recently teamed up to be each other’s “health buddy”. We check in with each other to share our goals and healthy choices, while strengthening our friendship through frequent communication and support. We live in different states, so we have found creative ways to stay in touch and keep each other motivated in our daily practices. Here are our some of our suggestions:
- Send photos of healthy food choices (Rey sends pictures of beautiful salads!)
- Text updates of healthy activities ("Just got back from the gym!" or "making sure to drink more water today")
- Ask for help ("Having a slow day- can you please send me some positive vibes?")
- Send motivational quotes
- Call once a week to check in (How are you feeling? What went well this week? What do you want to work on this week?)
We encourage you to pair up with someone who has a shared desire for a healthy lifestyle and enjoy cheering each other along your wellness journeys! Be well and LoveYourBrain.
