Many of our tips have discussed ways of staving off cognitive decline. These include immersing yourself in a well-rounded social life, living an active lifestyle, and fueling with the right foods. While this does remain true, there are many ways we can challenge our brains and allow them age gracefully!

Researchers have found that thanks to neuroplasticity, our brain’s ability to rewire itself in response to environment and experience, we can continue to change our brain well into adulthood. While it was always known that humans could continue learning, it wasn’t until very recently that scientists discovered that brains were physically changing.

By adding a few challenges to our everyday life, we can encourage our brain to learn and see things from a different perspective. As we get older, our brain will be used to a pattern of learning everyday which can help to decrease the risk of dementia or other cognitive declines.

What are some ways you can challenge your brain?

  • Do a crossword

  • Try a new sport or instrument

  • Brush your teeth with your non-dominant hand

  • Sit somewhere new at your house or favorite restaurant

  • Walk or run a new route in your town/city
