Whether you’ve had a TBI or not, water is essential for proper brain function. Just four hours without water qualifies as mild dehydration. In that time, energy levels and mood can take a significant dip.
One study in the Frontiers of Human Neuroscience found that just a single glass of water accelerated brain function by 14%! It’s also critical to stay hydrated while exercising, whether you’re out for a walk, doing high intensity interval training (HIIT), or running in a marathon (Congrats Brainfarmers!). In another study, 90 minutes of sweaty exercise sans water resulted in significant brain shrinkage. But, just a glass or two of water helps the brain regain its mass.
Some other reasons to regularly intake water (and these don’t include all the other non-brain health benefits!) include: improvement in reaction time, cognitive processing and memory, as well as prevention of gray matter shrinkage, premature aging, and mental fatigue.
So, if you’re feeling sluggish or your mental reserves have been used up, have a glass or two of water! Aim for half your bodyweight in ounces of water per day and you’ll be golden (plus more if you’re sweating a lot!).
