Land Acknowledgements

Did you know that LoveYourBrain is a fully remote organization?

That means our team members live across the globe, working and residing on many different lands. And as a team moving towards more diversity, equity, and inclusion, it’s important to acknowledge where we live and work. Acknowledgement is a powerful way to show respect, and acknowledging native land is a step toward correcting stories and practices that erase Indigenous peoples’ history and culture.

Why acknowledge lands?

From the U.S. Department of Arts and Culture: “For more than five hundred years, Native communities across the Americas have demonstrated resilience and resistance in the face of violent efforts to separate them from their land, culture, and each other. They remain at the forefront of movements to protect Mother Earth and the life the earth sustains. Today, corporate greed and federal policy push agendas to extract wealth from the earth, degrading sacred land in blatant disregard of treaty rights. Acknowledgement is a critical public intervention, a necessary step toward honoring Native communities and enacting the much larger project of decolonization and reconciliation.”

Not just a ticked box on a checklist.

We recognize that land acknowledgement is just one small step. And that if done as a standalone practice without deeper investigation, understanding, and action, can be harmful and performative. We encourage our team members (and you!), in addition to naming the lands they live on, to learn more about Native communities in their area and other ways to support.
