“I view my volunteerism with LoveYourBrain as paying it forward to my community that I so honor and connect to.” - Brian Herber (he/him)
Meet LoveYourBrain Volunteer, Brian Herber!
Brian (he/him) is a TBI Thriver, LYB community member, ambassador, and volunteer! In his words he is, “Creating Transformation Beyond Imagination!”
Brian is a masters racer specializing in the big Colorado hill climbs and time trials. Cycling and racing have been a long-time passion for him. Since sustaining a brain injury while cycling, Brian has participated in LYB Retreats, Yoga, and Mindset; has served as a Retreat volunteer and ambassador; and is now supporting our 3rd annual Ride for Resilience!
We sat down to learn more about what inspires Brian to support our community:
How did you get involved with LoveYourBrain?
Being a lifelong athlete, I have accumulated numerous brain injuries. My "coup de grâce" moment occurred in October of 2014 while out on a training ride. This one changed my life. In the course of my recovery process, an article on LoveYourBrain appeared one morning in my news feed. It wasn't long after that I attended a LoveYourBrain retreat in Empire, Colorado.
What does the LYB community mean to you?
When I attended my first LYB Retreat - it was then that I discovered "my community", "my tribe" and I was no longer alone! I have found a community that understands me and my challenges, accepts me for who I am, and supports me. LoveYourBrain has been a life changer for me!
What motivated you to volunteer for LYB Retreats and again for the Ride for Resilience?
Throughout my life I have tried to live by the words "pay it forward," as I'm not sure you can ever quite pay it back. I view my volunteerism with LoveYourBrain as paying it forward to my community that I so honor and connect to. It takes amazing people, as well as monetary resources, to provide the support and services of LoveYourBrain, and I try to contribute to both aspects. It is so meaningful to me to have the opportunity to interact and support those in our brain injury community to help them know that they are truly not alone. Without "paying it forward" in all aspects, we cannot perpetuate the amazing gifts that LoveYourBrain provides.
