Words for a LYB Retreat Volunteer

Bernie Freytag

“I found it (volunteering) to be one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.”

Tell us what inspired you to volunteer for LoveYourBrain.

After meeting the volunteers at the retreat I participate in who had similar TBI experiences, and seeing the compassion and care they were providing for people like myself, I knew I wanted pay forward that feeling. I never felt so understood or more welcome, and if there was a chance for me to be one of these kind people who could provide such comfort, I was totally in!

How did it feel to volunteer at a LYB Retreat?

As dramatic as it may sound, I felt like the best version of myself. I think I’ve always known deep down I wanted to help others who’ve gone through something similar as me, but I never really succeeded with that goal until I became a volunteer with LYB.

What was the most meaningful aspect of volunteering at a retreat, for you?

Witnessing the healing taking place within each individual, as well as the weaving between the participants … and I knowing that I had some small part in that happening. There is no judgment in this community and you are truly appreciated for every small part of what you can give.

If someone was thinking about volunteering at a LYB retreat, what would you share with them?

I’d obviously encourage anyone to volunteer, or at the very least give it a try. I’ve found it to be one of the most rewarding experiences of my life … and that’s no exaggeration. Sure I was nervous at first, and it’s possible I always will be to a certain extent before any retreat, but the afterglow of that week is so powerful that I’m so grateful I’m able to help.
